It’s been a rather long hiatus since my last blog post – part intentional and part due to the whimsies of everyday life that tend to creep up when you least expect them. When I first started blogging, I was struck by a statistic I came across online that stated that most blogs fall by the wayside or go stale within the first few months, and resolved to personally make it to the one year mark.
That milestone was achieved in March 2013 and happened to coincide with a natural lull in our travel schedule. It was the perfect opportunity to hit pause and reassess.
As with most things in life, our journey has evolved in ways unimaginable at the outset. What is it the say about God laughing when man makes plans? Exactly.
This past year, Jimmy and I have been blessed with the opportunity to see and experience many of the world’s most amazing sites and destinations. From the epic ruins of Machu Picchu to the romantic streets of Paris, our hearts have been touched and stretched in countless, unexpected ways. In the process, we have learned important lessons about ourselves, each other and what makes us happy.
That’s the crazy thing about travel. It shines a strong beam of light, welcome or not, directly into the heart of the traveler. For us, that has meant the realization that we need far less than we thought we did. Cliche, I know, but there’s something about traveling with a small backpack and a pair of trusty shoes that conveys that understanding deeper into one’s subconscious far better than a million self help books or pithy internet memes.
Our parallel blogs started out as a whimsical tribute to the crazy world of miles and points and the easy access to travel it opens up. Somewhere along the way, though, this focus has shifted from the earning, collecting and redeeming to the experiencing that was always the goal from the beginning. Even the travel began to subtly shift, with the emphasis on checking destinations off the list giving way to crafting a journey that speaks more directly to the spirit.
With that, we’re kicking off a return to blogging, but with a slightly different focus. Travel will continue to be a main staple, but the topics will be expanded to embrace the catchall spirit of whimsy that pervades and gives meaning to the simplest details in our every day life.
We thank you for reading and hope you’ll enjoy it.
